Description:
A great Pinotage from the highest and lowest yielding site of Babylon's Peak. The vineyard lies behind and in the protection of the granite dome that gives it its name, the vines are bush-vine trained, so they grow low and close to the earth. From up here, you can often feel the cooling breeze from the Atlantic in the afternoons during the hot season. When conditions are ideal and there is a cold front, you can even look down on a layer of clouds. This terroir allows the grapes to ripen in the morning sun and protects the fruit aromas and acidity during the night. The grapes ripen quite late. Aged for 12 months in French oak barriques. The Babylons Peak THE WEDGE Pinotage is dark red in colour with aromas of prunes and mocha on the nose. On the palate, it is very powerful and spicy with notes of dark fruits and smoked ham. Endowed with a rich tannin structure, it remains firm and long on the finish.

- Other products of Babylons Peak Private Cellar Babylon’s Peak is a private cellar located on the slopes of the Paardeberg Mountains between Malmesbury and Paarl. Four generations have farmed here, passing down their winemaking knowledge and passion through the ages. Current winemaker Stephan and his father continue this proud legacy today. The name Babylon’s Peak is derived from the very high granite peak on the farm, which is known to local people as ‘Babylonstoren’ (in English, ‘The Tower of Babylon’). Some of the highest vineyards in the Swartland region are found here at about 700 metres above sea level. The Paardeberg area is characterised by decomposed granite soils and unique terroir which result in optimum soil expression and fruit purity. All the grapes used for our wines are carefully selected and treated before the wine is made in the traditional way. Being a private cellar, we have the opportunity to select and bottle only the best quality wines.
