For the next (and last of the year) edition of Kalmoesfontein’s First Fridays Pizza Night with a live Show we give you: Lady Felicity and The Trumpets!

Cape Town, watch out (and join us!)

This August we’re taking the SKINK Swartland show on the road – the N7 to Cape Town’s hippest Bree Street that is.

We’ve hosted SKINK in Velddrift on the West Coast for two years and now it’s time to take it to the city – starting with the Mother City but not stopping there (soos Eben sê: Die ding wil ons op die pad vat. Durban, Joburg en Windhoek, Maputo!”).

When: 8 August 2023 – the next day is Women’s Day, a public holiday…

Where: Culture Wine Bar – get tickets on their website!

We hope to skink you some wyn in your city soon!

The Swartland Gospel – our second sermon.

As you may well know by now, The Swartland Gospel will be back this November for another communion; spreading the good words and works of people from places that make interesting wines.

As mentioned (here) our guests this year will come all the way from California (they say CPT – San Francisco is the longest flight you can take but I don’t know if they ever went to Sydney via Dubai and Hong Kong… anyway…):

Come November 3rd we’re taking over the seaside town of Saldanha with Teagan Passalacqua (of Turley Wines and Sandlands) and legendary grocer (and “catalyst in the re-evaluation and renaissance of Zinfandel”) Darrel Corti.

Now I know we said we’d release tickets by the end of June, BUT I am here to ask for your patience brothers and sisters; patience and faith as we negotiate the stormy seas of importing wine from a land across the waters. Between the admin skills of two travelling winemakers, the red tape, the import tax and the school holidays, we are not yet capable of calculating the cost of a ticket.

But I can share some news of wines with you today. I can tell you that we’re getting ready to ship fifteen different wines:

  • two Chenin Blancs (from the same vineyard but harvested five years apart)
  • two red table wines (from the same vintage but from vineyards 61.4 miles or 98km apart)
  • a Marato (aka Mourvedre)
  • a Cinsault
  • a Trousseau (I had to look that one up: aka Bastardo and Merenzao, is an old variety of red wine grape originating in eastern France)
  • a Carignan
  • and no less than seven Zinfandels (from one vintage; two different brands and six unique vineyards)

To get on board our bus for an epic tasting trip around California, CLICK HERE TO JOIN THE MAILING LIST and be FIRST to know when we do release tickets.

We thank you for your patient understanding.

Want to hang out? Save these dates

Happy Winter Solstice! We’ve had quite the start to winter here in the Cape of Storms. June has seen some heavy rains (we’ve had 153mm since the start of the month!) and cold temperatures with parts of the Western Cape experiencing extreme flooding.

That, and the upcoming school holidays, has lead us to the decision to postpone all farm events and pizza nights for a while.

We do however want you to save a few dates – cause we’ve got exciting plans for the rest of the year and we want to see you (t)here!

Fri 1 Sept (Happy Spring Day) – Frist Friday Pizza Night with RAAF live – Este & Lourens will be back for another high energy performance on the farm(‘s tables).

Sat 2 Sept – Cellar tour, wine tasting & three course spring lunch

(book accommodation and make a weekend out of it!)

Sat 23 Sept – Rugby World Cup x Heritage Day (ours and Semma’s…) cause its the Boks vs Ireland – we’ll spoil you with food from the braai followed by the match on a big screen (9pm)!

Fri 3 Nov – The Swartland Gospel presents Teagan Passalacqua and Darell Corti followed by dinner in Saldanha (more details here)

Fri 1 Dec – Frist Friday Pizza Night with Lady Felicity & The Trumpets live. We fell in love with this group when they played at a wedding on the farm in April and we want to share their gees & talent with you!

Sat 2 Dec – Cellar tour, wine tasting & three course summer lunch

En dan lê nog n jaar amper op sy rug!

We might do a few pop up (spur of the moment / when we see the week’s weather will be nice) pizza / curry / steak / burger nights this winter, if you want to be informed of any of those, send me a mail on helena@aabadenhorst.com.

And remember we are currently running some winter accommodation specialssee them here.

See you soon, stay warm (drink wine)!

Save the Date – The SWOR is going to the beach!

You all know the date, cause the first weekend of November has been in the Swartland’s wine calendar since the inaugural The Swartland Revolution in 2010!

Over the last 13 years the revolution spilled into the streets of Riebeek as the SIP and the SWOR hosted the Street Party. Last year we hosted the first edition of The Swartland Gospel on the Friday night.

Now we are just thrilled to announce that the gospel is back and we’re taking it to the seaside!

This year, for the second sermon we’re bringing you two Americans nogal.

Robert Camuto of The Wine Spectator writes of our first guest:

From his sprawling Corti Brothers vintage family grocery in Sacramento, California, (Darell) Corti has helped shape the wine landscape for 60 years: bottling wine on both sides of the Atlantic, guiding generations of winemakers and aiding in the revival of California Zinfandel.

… During my recent trip to California, winemaker Tegan Passalacqua of Turley called Corti and his discerning palate “a quality control for the wine industry.”

“Even when you do a good job,” Passalacqua says, “he tells you that you can do better.”

Which brings us to our second guest…

His LinkedIn profile lists “Harvest Intern; Sadie Family Wines, Swartland, South Africa ;Jan 2011 – Mar 2011, and now he’s coming back!

The Turley website says “Under the direction of winemaker Tegan Passalacqua, Turley now makes 50 different wines from over 50 vineyards across California, primarily Zinfandel and Petite Syrah, with many vines dating back to the late 1800s. By farming organically and focusing on old vine vineyards of these varieties, Turley aims to both create and preserve California’s unique winemaking culture.”

Bringing the Sandlands and Sacramento to Saldanha – we’re taking the gospel to the real West Coast.

DATE & PLACE: Friday 3 November 2023, Salanha Bay (the Swartland Wine & Olive Route Seaside Party takes place at the same venue the next day).

More info on wines and vibes coming soon.

Tickets will go on sale 30 June.

Keep an eye on this blog and the social media page for The Swartland Gospel for more info.

For now, save the dates and book your roomsbook directly at The Saldanha Bay Hotel with code AAB411 for a special rate of R1250 for two people sharing, B&B included. Plesier!

You (and your friends) could check into our accommodation on Friday afternoon and take a sunset stroll that ends at The Old House for pizza and a show by Albert Frost & Schalk Joubert!

On Saturday you can rise slow, have some farm fresh eggs with our locally baked bread and meander over to where you hear music (probably Bob Dylan) coming from the record player in the cellar.

Here Adi will take you through a tasting of our wines (some still in tanks and barrels, some older vintages) before you sit down for a 3 course lunch prepared by Charl & the talented kitchen team.

After a long lazy lunch and a few more glasses (bottles?) of wine it’s a short stumble to your luxury bed for an afternoon nap. And then you are on your own to stare at the stars or fireplace; stay in or go to dinner at one of our favourite eateries in Riebeek (try Artvark Eats, MARRAS or The Barn) or perhaps for Hysteria at Osteria in Wellington.
