The history of Simonsig is inextricably linked to that of the Malan family. Frans Malan marked a milestone in South African wine culture. In 1971, the passionate sparkling wine drinker brought the first Cap Classique (bottle- fermented) onto the market. As the category did not yet exist in this form, he called it Kaapse Vonkel, sparkling Cape. He also founded the Stellenbosch Wine Routes together with other winegrowers, an association of over 200 producers to bundle and strengthen the wine region. In South Africa and beyond, Kaapse Vonkel is still one of the region's most popular sparkling wines. His legacy is carried on today by his sons Francois and Johan, as well as his three grandchildren Francois- Jacques, Christelle and Michael. They focus on Frans' virtues and only produce sustainably in terms of the environment and social commitment to each and every employee and their families.
