Region Valpolicella, Verona.

Characteristics Deep garnet-red color tinged with purple. Heady, spicy bouquet with intense, multy-layered aromas of ripe cherry, bitter almond and toasty vanilla. Opulent silky texture, with full, rich flavors in the mouth carrying throught to a very lenghty, pleasantly bitter finish.

Grapes Corvina e Corvinone veronese 70%, Rondinella 30%.

Traditional drying of the grapes began in late September, with extreme care exercised to maintain clean, healthy grapes throughout the process. After 90 days of drying, the grapes had shed 35-38% of their weight.

Vineyards Grapes were selected from 36 hectars(9 acres) of hillside vineyards in some of the best viticultural areas in the comune of Marano, planted in limestone-based soils at 300mt (985ft) elevation with south-east exposure. Grapes are planted 3000/ha (7410/acre) and pergoletta-trained (high-arching cordon, or pergoletta semplice).

Vinification Soft pressing of th grapes. Cool-temperature fermentation began in January 2005, followed by a 30-day maceration on the skins.

Analysis Alcol 15.90% vol; residual sugar 6 g/l; dry extract 35 g/l; acidity total 6,10 g/l.

Food suggestions Traditionally combined with game or venison, grilled or braised meat, very old cheeses. To try also for meditation. To uncork an hour before serving, serve in large glass, at the temperature of 18-20°C.

Cellars The wine maturated for 18 months in new 225-liter Allier oak barrels with medium toast and then bottled.

Bottle Special 1950's style Bordeaux 750ml bottle.

Vintage 2006

Clusters were rigorously graded and hand-picked, with Luigi Campagnola selecting the best lots on arrival. The grapes chosen had sugar content of 192 g/l. 2004 growing year: very good in the Valpolicella viticultural area, with above average skin-thickness. Weather was perfect during harvest period.

- Other products of Campagnola Giuseppe Carlo Campagnola founded the winery in 1886 and in 1907 he received his first official award (and the oldest official document) with a gold medal for the best “reccioto” wine at the “Mostra Campionaria di Verona”. Caterina, Carlo’s wife, was recently widowed and had ten children. Only a short time before, she had bravely began to run the winery, which, at time, was located at Gazzo di Purano in the district of Marano di Valpolicella. Giuseppe, one of the ten children of Caterina, managed the Antica Osteria in Verona, while his brothers took care of the winery and the vineyards. After the World War II, the tavern was sold and the land was divided up among the grandchildren. In 1946, Giuseppe with his sons Luigi and Giancarlo, founded the current winery, located in Via Agnella in Valgatara and began the production and selection of the Classici Veronesi Wines.
